Welcome to Castors Source

Castors are pivoting rollers that are attached to the bottom of objects to make them move easily. Wheels & castors can be fitted to all types of machinery, equipment, furniture or transport so they are more portable.

Castors can be rigid so that the object will only move in one direction or swivel so that it is manoeuvrable in different directions. There are many types of braking system available for stopping objects on castors quickly and safely. These include the most basic side locking type that compresses the yoke hub, top locking and middle locking by means of a screw,

Industrial castors tend to be of sturdier construction than those used for the domestic market while heavy duty castors are used to move heavy and extremely heavy loads.

Industrial Castors, Castors and Wheels, Trolley Castors, Heavy Duty Castors, Light Duty Castors

Castors are single, double, or compound wheels which are mounted on to an object to enable easier movement. They are frequently found on shopping carts, office chairs and material handling equipment. Castors can be fixed to roll in one direction, or mounted on a pivot, so that the wheel will automatically swivel and align itself in the direction in which it is moving. Swivelling castors are sometimes themselves attached to handles, so users can turn the caster into the desired direction.

Castors are used in many industrial applications. Heavy duty castors and industrial castors are used on platform trucks, carts, assemblies, and tow lines in plants.

A castor can be defined as a wheel which is mounted to a fork, but has an additional offset steering joint. The steering joint allows the wheel to rotate freely in 360°. This allows for easy turning of objects without changing the direction of the chassis that the casters are mounted to. The angle and distance of the wheel axles and steering joint can be modified and custom made for different types of caster performance.

Castors and wheels are typically used on carts and furniture; they are mounted underneath these platforms. Castors are advantageous for moving vehicles or platforms in both straight and turning motions. Trolley castors are commonly used on supermarket trolleys. During straightforward motion, the swivel caster will tend to rotate parallel to the direction of travel. This can be seen on a shopping trolley when the caster rotates backwards during forward motion down an aisle. The benefit of this caster rotation is that the vehicle will naturally tend to travel in a straight direction. Precise steering is not required because the castors do tend to maintain straight motion. This is also true during turning. The castor rotates again working parallel to the turning radius and provides a smooth turn. This is illustrated on a shopping trolley as the wheels rotate differently depending on how tight a turn is made. Because of these two qualities, light duty castors are often used on dollies, office chairs, and wheelchairs. Castors can be designed in many different sizes and materials depending on their intended use. Typically, they are made from rubber, plastic, nylon, aluminium, or stainless steel. Generally, castors operate most effectively on smooth and flat surfaces.
